This philosophy guides the company, an offshoot of the Oki Electric Industry Company of Japan, which focuses on providing specialized printer and printer ink cartridge solutions to all of its clients. This company is extremely customer-focused, and was the first one in the printing industry to offer 24/7 tech support, in an effort to make sure that all of its customers were receiving any and all of the help they need.

The Oki Corporation was founded in Japan in 1881 by Kibataro Oki, originally under the name Meikohsa. This company produced the first telephones in Japan, only five years after their invention by Alexander Graham Bell. The company flourished during the First World War, and installed the country's first private branch exchange (PBX) system, which is a specialized business telephone line system. After the war, the company struggled to keep up with the demand to supply new phones and replace those that had been damaged. In 1956, the newly-named Oki Electric Co, Ltd produced Japan's first 100 line switchboard.

In the 1960's, Oki gradually shifted to a business electronics focus, developing commercial printers and bank machine technology. Most of its products were utilized by the financial industry, and in 1982 the company developed the world's first cash-recycling ATM, which allowed cash deposited to be removed almost immediately as a withdrawal, greatly increasing efficiency. In 1972, two businessmen from Philadelphia reached an agreement with Oki Japan to create Okidata America. The company focused on providing printer and printer ink solutions to a broad range of businesses along with supplying dedicated and specialized tech support. In 1998, Okidata introduced a product line of light emitting diode (LED) printers to the commercial market, which proved extremely popular. Okidata now enjoys more than fifty percent of the total market share in business printing, according to its website.
