In 1975, the Epson Company came to town. It had as its mandate to supply OEM computer parts and peripherals to the business market, including printers and printer ink cartridges. In 1979, as the desktop computer market began to gain ground, Epson saw the need for a well-priced and reliable desktop printer for business use. As a result, the MX-80 dot matrix printer was born. This printer was reliable, affordable and could output pages in very quick succession. It was extremely well received in the business world, capturing over 60% of the printer market. Epson had well and truly arrived.

Epson America is actually a subsidiary company of the Epson Seiko Corporation, which in turn had its origins in Suwa Seikosha, a member of the Seiko group. The Seiko group itself was developed out of a successful trading company which specialized in clock and watch making, beginning in 1881. The Suwa Seikosha Company was responsible for much advancement in the field of CMOS integrated circuits and LCD displays, both of which are essential in current computer technology. It is no surprise, therefore, that Epson American led the charge in new business printer technology when the MX-80 was released. The Epson Company has been responsible for a number of technology industry "firsts," including the first notebook computer (HX-20) in 1981, and the single-pass flatbed scanner in 1989. In 1999, Epson had the world's fastest printer in its class in the form of the Epson Stylus Color 900.

Today, Epson has diversified its focus, and now produces a range of products including the printer ink cartridge, LCD displays, point of sale technology and scanners. The company is still widely known for its business printer solutions, and is tasked with producing high-quality color ink-jet printers, dot matrix printers and heat-transfer receipt printers for many banks and other retail industries. In short, Epson knows how to make printers and printer ink, and knows how to do it well. The company is also a proud partner in the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program, which is committed to increasing the energy efficiency of all electronic devices.
