Three Ways To Get More Life Out Of A Printer Ink Cartridge

2010-10-14

One thing that anyone who owns a printer would want to avoid is buying a replacement printer ink cartridge. A printer ink cartridge can be very expensive, and for those who run lot of print jobs every day, this can work out to be really costly. While there are alternatives such as, third party printer ink refills and ink refill kits, there are several risks that come with using these. Hence, it is always a good idea to find ways to get the most out of printer cartridge life. Here are three ways to do it.

One of the easiest ways to extend printer cartridge life is by printing only text. Just because you are printing a page does not mean you have to print everything on it, unless necessary. As far as possible, select only the text from the required page, past it in to a new work document and then print the text. This way, you avoid printer ink getting wasted on unnecessary images and other data. This is especially useful when printing web pages, which might contain lot of irrelevant data. If you do have to print images, you could try bringing down the quality of the image. If you are able to reduce the amount of colors used in the image, you will be able to save the amount of ink that is used for printing it.

Use the preview option. As simple as it may sound, using the preview option can actually save you some cartridge ink, especially when printing. By using the preview option, you will be able to see exactly what is getting printed. Again, if you are printing web pages, by using the preview option you might be able to shift images and text around and remove data that is not required. You will also be able to reduce text and image size, which again brings down the usage of printer ink and extend printer cartridge life.

Powering down the printer correctly will also extend printer cartridge life. Most people overlook the importance of powering down their printer correctly and have a tendency to turn off their printer by pushing the power strip switch. If you do not power down the printer correctly, the print heads will not be set in the right position, and this will cause the printer ink to dry up faster or clog.

Even though the price of printers have come down drastically, the cost of printer ink cartridges are extremely high. Because you cannot avoid buying printer ink cartridges, the next best option is to look at ways to get the most out of what you already have.
