The Difference Between Printer Ink And Toner Cartridges
2010-09-05
Both printer ink cartridges and toner cartridges are essential components for printing systems. Indeed, without those items, printers are practically useless. In general, they have many similarities. They both carry out the task of containing the ink that spreads onto the paper during the printing process. Many modern ink and toner cartridges have very similar color parameters as well. While both types of cartridges are capable of producing high quality work and share a number of similarities, there are many differences to consider as well. It is important for printer users to be familiar with those differences so that they can choose the right cartridge for their printing and budget needs.
One of those differences relates to the consistency of the printed material. Printer ink cartridges hold liquid ink to which the printer applies pressure which expels the ink through the printer head onto the paper. While some printer ink is oil-based, a lot of printer ink is water-based. Toner cartridges by contrast are filled with a fine, dry carbon-based powder mixed with a polymer that is burned onto the paper with the aid of a laser. The heat of a fuser melts the toner particles which makes them adhere to the paper in the desired patterns.
Whether the user is an individual, a family or a business, cost is usually a factor. Cost can be a particularly significant difference separating both kinds of cartridges. Printer ink jet cartridges usually are listed at relatively cheaper costs than toner cartridges. Cost becomes more significant when the output of documents to be printed is very high or the printing job is scheduled to occur over lengthy periods of time. This user must know what his or her printing needs are in order to choose the most appropriate cartridge.
A couple of other areas for a user to consider are speed and quality. Printers that use printer ink cartridges typically print more slowly than laser printers that use toner cartridges. This is partly attributable to the sophisticated print head technology that laser printers tend to have. As well, ink jet cartridges typically offer a lower quality print image than laser toner cartridges provide. While there is some difference, the gap is not very wide among modern printers. Very often, laser printers with toner cartridges are helpful for users who need high-resolution output for professional presentations or other media that will be widely-viewed.
Today's printing market is very diverse and covers a great deal of ground. It is important for the user to understand his or her options within this vast landscape in order to choose the best one for his or her printing needs.
