Why Printer Companies Patent Their Printer Ink Cartridges
2010-03-24
When you are shopping for replacement printer ink cartridges, you'll notice that they come in all shapes and sizes. Besides having different types of ink, the cartridges themselves vary greatly in their dimensions; some are square, while others are rectangular or flat. Also, there are always several brands on the shelf. Some of them come from the original manufacturer and some of them are generic brands. You may ask yourself why there are so many types. The answer is that every printer manufacturer has a patent on its own type of printer ink cartridge and for good reason.
A lot of research and study goes into the making of a printer. For example, the Kyocera-Mita Corporation, founded in 1959, originally specialized in the manufacture of television picture tubes. The company built upon that technology and quickly diversified into a company with ties to the aerospace, computer, and office equipment manufacturing industries. And this is just one of many companies that manufacture printers which are used in both homes and offices. Though we do not always think of it in those terms, it takes teams of skilled professionals to produce a machine capable of printing documents and photos. And each company must protect its own design, and that includes both the machine and cartridges that go into it.
In order to produce images of high quality, companies must also do extensive research into printer ink technology. Toner and printer ink cartridges are also called "consumables." These consumables are manufactured using the latest advancements. They take advantage of technology such as newly developed polymerized pigments to create brilliant color that is easier on the environment. When shopping for printer ink cartridges for a brand name printer, digital copier or fax machine, you may buy an original equipment manufacturer printer ink cartridge or a remanufactured printer cartridge. Remanufactured cartridges use the original case that has been used at least once by a consumer. Certain companies then disassemble the case, clean it out, and refill the cartridge with new ink. Because the patented cartridge is still being used, it works just as well as an original brand.
Whether using a printer cartridge made by the original manufacturer or one that has been remanufactured by another company, it is possible to get a great photo from your printer. Years of product development has gone into refining printers and printer ink technology. The wide variety of products available is due to the diverse technology that goes into making these products. Companies patent their products not just to protect the shape or the type of ink, but to protect the engineering and design that has gone into making each printer and the cartridges it uses truly unique.
