How To Remove Ink If Spilled From A Printer Ink Cartridge
2010-08-24
When changing printer ink cartridges, there is always a slight risk that there will be some spilled ink. Fortunately, there are ways to clean these spills without much effort. The key to success with all of these solutions is trying to clean the stain as soon as possible. You also want to make sure you have all the necessary materials collected when you start the removal process so that you don't have to stop once you begin.
If you have spilled ink on clothes, the first thing to do is to try to dab out as much of the spilled ink as possible. Gather a few damp rags or sponges and some rubbing alcohol. Use the clean, damp rag or sponge to sop up as much ink as possible. Then bring the clothing over to a sink and pour rubbing alcohol on the stain. You should see some of the ink rinse out of the stain. Be sure to wash the ink down the sink and then allow the garment to soak in rubbing alcohol for about half an hour. Rinse it in cool water and then wash it with detergent and the stain should be completely removed.
Another common victim of leaking printer ink cartridges is carpet. For this, you will need a vacuum, dishwashing detergent, some cold water and a damp sponge or rag. If there is a large amount of ink, use the vacuum extension to suck up the excess without spreading it around. Then mix one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent with about two cups of cold water. Soak a sponge or rag in this and then start to scrub out the stain. The sponge or rag will begin to soak up the ink so be sure to use a different part when it appears to be getting ink-filled.
Lastly you want to remove any ink you may have on your hands. You want to do this last because you are bound to get spilled ink on your hands while cleaning any other surface or material. Start by washing them thoroughly with warm water and soap. Soap with pumice will help wash out tough stains without being too abrasive on the skin. If the soap you have is not strong enough to get the job done, a steel wool pad will help tremendously as well. It's a little more abrasive on the skin than soap with pumice but it will get the job done.
Hopefully you'll never have to use any of these methods and your printer ink cartridges will stay intact. But if ever faced with the unfortunate circumstance of spilled ink, at least you will be prepared.
