Foolproof Instructions for Replacing Printer Ink Cartridges
2010-05-31
One of the easiest ways to extend the life of a printer is to change its printer ink cartridges when they get low or are empty. While the instructions for changing out these cartridges are typically straight forward, if they are not followed properly it can result in a loss of print quality or even damage to the printer itself. Although every make and model of printer will have slightly different instructions on how to properly replace its printer ink cartridges, there are a few general and foolproof rules that should be followed to ensure a smooth replacement.
First, make sure that the print cartridge you intend to use will fit into the printer you intend to put it in. The box containing the cartridge should list the model numbers of the printers that it is compatible with. If there is any confusion, for example if a refurbished printer cartridge is being used, check online for the printer type and cartridge specifications before proceeding. Once you have confirmed that you have the right printer ink in hand, the next step is to remove the old cartridge from the printer. Open the printer and examine the cartridge already in place. Not only the printer manual but the actual plastic brackets themselves should have instructions on removal. Read them before going any further. Typically, the old cartridge will have a clip or bracket holding it in place that has to be slipped off before it can be removed. Once the old cartridge has been taken out, but before placing the new one in position, examine both the old cartridge and its destination. If there is any spilled ink or ink leaking out of the cartridge; clean it up. Be especially careful around the area will the print head will sit - dried ink in this area can cause poor document printing.
Once the housing is clean and the proper cartridge is in hand, install it, taking care to make sure it is properly seated and locked in place. Next, close the printer and turn it on, as well as a computer it is connected to. Print not only a test page but several test pages to make sure that the printer is creating pages with dark enough images and no streaks. If there are any problems, re-open the printer, remove the cartridge and repeat the procedure, including cleaning, and then re-print a test page. If problems persist, the new ink cartridge may be to blame. Try a second new cartridge. If this is also unsuccessful, the problem may in fact lie with the printer. While no procedure is absolutely foolproof, following these instructions will help to ensure a successful printer ink cartridge replacement.
